EP Review: Walk the Moon – Tightrope EP

Walk the Moon has been one of my favorite breakout artists of the year. Coming from complete “UNKNOWN” status to seeing critical acclaim from every major music public publication and massive success on the Billboard charts. Anna Sun” has been circulating since 2010, but has only just recently seen radio play. Why? With indie bands who are ahead of their time this happens quite frequently. Think MGMT, Foster The People or AWOLNATION. They were all in the waiting room several years before seeing their hay day. Walk the Moon is just as deserving and will be JUST as successful as the aforementioned.

Key Tracks: Tightrope,” “Drunk In The Woods,” and “Burning Down The House – Live”

After a few years of gestation and introduction to the public Walk the Moon has arrived with their new Tightrope EP. Every track radio ready. Bursting at the seems with youthful energy, pulsing synths, hypnotic guitar riffs, and addictive male falsetto vocals. There is this overwhelming warmth and radiance that pulses from the each track. It begs you to deny your headphones to start a massive beach party, blasting this bunch of feel-good songs for the world to hear. It’s too happy, positive, and explosive to keep to yourself.

I was fortunate enough to see these guys at Austin City Limits a few weeks ago and let me say: see them live if you can. I’m not a huge fan of publishing cover songs on albums. I feel like they are best kept live, however “Burning  Down The House – Live” has to be one of the best covers I have heard in recent years. It is phenomenal! Perfect gritty vocals, that necessary chunky snare tone, and exquisite use of guitar effects. It’s the perfect example of the energy these guys bring to a live performance. Walk the Moon are going places.
